Want that ‘unmade bed’ look?

A trend that we’ve seen recently is a move towards that ‘unmade bed’ look. It makes a bedroom feel everything that it should…cozy, warm, inviting and relaxed. While I wouldn’t normally recommend it for styling to sell, it can look great for those who love to live in a home that looks and feels on-trend yet laid back.

So how do you achieve that unmade bed look, without it looking like a hot mess? Follow my ‘how to’ guide to find your way out of ever having to make another bed again.

You’ll need…

  • A quilt and sheet set that’s made from natural fabrics like linen or cotten.
  • Minimum 2 euro pillows with a down or feather filling
  • 2 standard pillows
  • A plush doona/duvet cover with a down or feather filling
  • a large textured throw
  • a valance (if you have an ensemble)

Select a set of sheets and a doona cover with a relaxed vibe – think pastels, whites, soft greys or autumn hues. Between Adairs, PillowTalk and Sheridan I always find what I’m after. I’ve found that cotton or linen works best as it scrunches in a normal way and and falls in a relaxed form. This look won’t work for stiff sheets, so make sure if you’ve bought a new sheet set that you wash it first to remove starch and other chemicals. If you have an ensemble, purchase a valance to hide the base. It’s inexpensive and looks far more finished than having an exposed ensemble base.

Place the valance and fitted sheet on the bed, then place your flat sheet on the bed. Tuck the end of the flat sheet in at the foot of the bed (no one wants cold toes), but leave the rest out (you have permission to forget the hospital corners).

Lay your euro’s at the back of your standard pillows, and arrange them against your headboard or, if you have an ensemble, at the head of your bed against the wall. Pop your standard pillows at the front of your euro’s but not in any particular position. Don’t worry about symmetry or things having to line up. Remember, this is a relaxed look, so relax already!

Throw a big plush doona over the bed and pull the top of it back down a bit, making sure that you don’t smooth, flatten or tuck.

Layer like an onion! Drape a textured throw across your doona and fluff the quilt back up if you need, making sure it’s not been ‘neatened’ by accident. Now…resist the urge to smooth, flatten and tuck and you’re ready to rock and roll!

After a long night of sleep (or whatever it is you crazy kids do these days), hop out of bed and DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT tuck, smooth or flatten those sheets or pillows. Plump up those pillows, fluff that doona back up, pull it down a bit (maybe 3/4 of the way), throw a throw back on and away you go.
