In my 20’s while my friends were buying flat pack furniture or sleeping on a mattress on the floor, I bought myself a four-poster bed, and everyone thought I had gone mad. In a time when I didn’t know what the future might hold for me, I found that a four-poster bed gives you a sense of comfort and safety. The effect was relaxing, while the look was a little dramatic (similar to my love life at the time). And while married life, and two children later that bed is long gone, I find myself looking back on it with a smile.
Can you be in-love with a bed? Maybe, when it makes you feel like you are being hugged and like you are special, and that is precisely what a four-poster bed makes you feel. And during a time when you don’t know if that guy will call back, or if your friend really has your back, it’s quite a treat to have your bedroom as a special place find comfort and safety.
Often rooms can be personality lite, without much colour or texture. Bedrooms are one of those places that I find while inspecting client’s abodes, that need a little more love and attention. It’s a common place to pop the laundry basket down, empty your pockets out, or leave a bag or suitcase in that hasn’t quite been unpacked yet. It’s also quite normal in my consults to encounter tiny little lamps, tired bedside tables and old fashioned headboards.
While people physically spend more time in the kitchen and living space, than any other room in the house, it’s often the bedroom where our hearts are, and the bedrooms that leave something to be desired. When styling, I create a bedroom that buyers would aspire to have. One where you feel that you can leave the troubles of the day at the door, and truly be at ease.
For bedrooms I favour stark whites and warm neutrals. It’s the room for roses or posies, a place to get in touch with your feminine side. Dashes of soft colors will break up expanses of neutrals, and not piss off the husband too much, while large chic lamps instantly update a tired room, along with a loud statement throw pillow or rug. Incorporating beautiful artworks is a must to tie it all back together.
The bedroom is the one room where you can really indulge, so go ahead and give me a call, and I’ll pull something fabulous together that gives you a beautiful space that you can yearn to come home to. Just don’t forget to spend some time in there with your eyes open… preferably on a good book (or blog!).
